Technical leadership is ownership, not attendance
At scale, surprises are normal. Leadership is not preventing every incident; it is making the system understandable: clear boundaries, runbooks people can follow, and decisions documented enough that the team is not hostage to one person’s head.
Mentoring, in that context, is less about syntax reviews and more about teaching how to reason under uncertainty: what to measure, when to stop optimizing locally, and how to trade time against risk.
The goal is a team that ships, learns from production, and still has energy for the next hard problem. Anything else is just theater.
